The impending departure of Per Mertesacker means that Arsene Wenger – provided he is still in charge of Arsenal at this point – has a major decision to make this summer – naming the next Arsenal captain.
A squad that has been frequently accused of lacking leadership in recent years arguably lacks an outstanding candidate but it is an opportunity for Wenger to take the squad in a slightly different direction.
Also, there is a tendency in English football to overstate the importance of the club captain; good sides need leaders all over the pitch and no matter who Wenger plumps for in the end, that is likely to still be an issue for his side.

That aforementioned lack of an outstanding candidate does make the race for the captaincy a hotly-contested one and it is fair to say that there is no consensus of opinion among the Gunners fans.
