October 11 1980 – A double by Colin McAdam and an own goal scored by defender Jim Jefferies gives Rangers a comfortable 3-1 win over Hearts at Ibrox. But the match is best remembered for the Hearts consolation goal in the dying minutes. It was scored by Barcelona Bear and Rangers legend Alex MacDonald, and it saw the vast majority of the 23,000 Ibrox crowd give a standing ovation for a goal scored by an opposition player.
October 12 1974 – Rangers hammer Dunfermline 6-1 at East End Park in a memorable afternoon for 21-year-old striker Derek Parlane, who scored FIVE goals. It was the first time a Rangers player had hit as many in a match since Jim Forrest hit five against Stirling Albion eight years earlier. The other goal was scored by Derek Johnstone, in a season when Jock Wallace’s team ended Celtic’s dreams of winning ten-in-a-row by cruising to their first championship win since 1964.
October 13 1990 – Rangers thrash St Mirren 5-0 at Ibrox in a devastating display. But despite goals by Ally McCoist (2), Mark Walters (2) and Mo Johnston , it was the name of a defender who made all the headlines. Soviet international Oleg Kuznetsov made a massive impression on his club debut, in a display of solid defending and accurate passing that had manager Graeme Souness full of compliments. Unfortunately, the Ukranian would not be able to fulfil the huge potential he had shown, suffering a terrible knee injury the following weekend.
October 14 2016 – Mark Warburton’s Rangers scrape a narrow 1-0 win away to Inverness to claim just their fourth win in their first nine league games, as the club struggle in their first season back in the top flight. The goal represented a significant landmark for striker Kenny Miller as it was his 100th competitive goal for the club across his three spells in the Rangers colours.
October 15 1966 – Rangers draw 1-1 with Hearts at Tynecastle with a goal by veteran centre forward Jimmy Millar. This would be the 169th and last competitive goal for the club by one of the most popular players ever to wear the jersey. Millar played for 12 seasons, winning 5 league titles, 5 Scottish Cups and 4 League Cups. He scored no fewer than six goals in major Hampden finals between May 1960 and May 1964. One of countless Rangers fans of the time, Walter Smith stated Millar was his favourite ever player.
October 16 1875 – Rangers defeat The First Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers by 7-0 in the first round of the Scottish Cup. The match has a historic place in club history as it featured the first recorded hat-trick by a Rangers player in any national competition. This was achieved by centre forward John Campbell, with these the only three recorded Scottish Cup goals he ever scored for the club. All four of the Founding Fathers played in the match – Moses McNeil, Peter McNeil, Peter Campbell and William McBeath, with the great Tom Vallance the team captain.
