According to reports in The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are willing to offer manager Mauricio Pochettino a lucrative improvement on his current £5.5m-a-year (approximately £105,000-a-week) contract, to lead the club into their new £850m stadium as he continues to attract interest from other clubs.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Telegraph says that Pochettino further enhanced his reputation in European football as his team came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Juventus in Turin on Tuesday night, with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain among the teams that admire the Argentine boss.
The Telegraph says that Spurs are desperate to keep the 45-year-old as they move into their new stadium for the 2018/19 campaign, and they believe that Pochettino wants to see through the project that he started when he joined them from Southampton four years ago.
The report adds that it will be two years since the Argentine’s previous contract extension in May, and the north London outfit are ready to hand him a pay rise if he makes it clear that he wants to stay put.
Will he still be Tottenham manager next season?
As things stand, both Zinedine Zidane and Urai Emery could be in danger of losing their jobs at the end of the season with Real performing poorly in the Spanish top flight, and with PSG losing 3-1 to the La Liga giants in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie on Wednesday night.
If either or both bosses go during the summer it would be likely that Pochettino would be the near the top of their list of replacements, and the 45-year-old may find it difficult to turn down the chance to manage Real in particular given their standing in European football.
That said, you get the feeling that the Argentine has plenty of time to get an opportunity elsewhere in the future, and right now he has an exciting project with Spurs and great players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli that can win both him and the club some trophies.
