Neil Lennon is delighted that David Turnbull is on his way to Celtic and has hinted at immediate action for the player in his first-team, speaking in a press conference earlier today.
What’s the story?
Turnbull has been the centre of heavy transfer speculation in recent days, having first turned down a Celtic contract offer to explore his options, then rejecting the chance to join Norwich City to travel back to Scotland and sign for the Bhoys.
At the time of writing he has still not officially joined the Hoops but Lennon has confirmed he is to sign after a medical on Friday.
Leigh Griffiths is ready and raring to go for Celtic next season. One fan discusses what we can expect from him in the video below…
Speaking to assembled press, the Celtic Park boss said:
“He’s chosen us over Norwich for footballing reasons, not financial. Trust me on that. That augurs well for the lad going forward.
He’s a player we’ve admired for a while. He had a great season last year – a breakthrough season. He’s a very good Scottish talent that we want to nurture and bring on. Hopefully he’ll thrive in this environment.
He’s quite an elegant player. Technically very good, proficient with both feet. He scored 15 goals in 30 games, which is quite a return for a midfield player. We want him to carry on in the same vein.
Could he go straight into the team? Of course he could.”
Can Turnbull make an immediate impact?
The 19-year-old certainly appears to be earmarked for plenty of football over the coming season.
Lennon mentions he has chosen the Hoops for footballing reasons and that would suggest the Glasgow side have managed to give him more first-team guarantees than Premier League new boys Norwich.
As Lennon points out, Turnbull carries a significant goal threat and that will make him a desirable choice for the attack-minded Celtic, even in matches that the midfielder starts on the bench.

Celtic have strength in midfield already but there are potential opportunities for the player, with Tom Rogic losing form in the final few months of last season.
Lennon’s comments are what you’d expect from a manager when a new signing arrives, but any thoughts that the player may have to wait a while for the right opportunity to come along at Celtic Park have been kicked into touch.
