According to Wales Online, Swansea winger Connor Roberts has been linked away from the Liberty Stadium this January.
The Swans would have hoped that the 23-year-old would sign a new contract like fellow academy product Joe Rodon, but that is yet to happen. Therefore, rather than waiting until the end of the season to see him leave for free, the club should try and make some money on the player in the coming months.
Roberts has been in terrific form for The Swans and Wales in 2017/18, featuring in every Championship game for his club, in what can be seen as his breakthrough season. His versatility has made him a vital figure for Swansea this term, as he can play anywhere along the right flank. He is as comfortable as a winger as he has at right-back.
It would obviously be disappointing to Graham Potter to see one of his young stars go, but he shouldn’t lose too much sleep over the deal. With fellow young wingers Barrie McKay and Daniel James at the club, the club are well resourced. With the addition of Oli McBurnie, who can also play as a winger, as well as Jefferson Montero, The Swans have plenty of talent on the wings.
It is in the right-back position that the club may be a bit scarcer in. Roberts has primarily been used as a right-back this season, and while Kyle Naughton can always step up if Roberts goes, that may be the area The Swans become vulnerable in. Then again, with the money that the club may get from the Roberts sale, there is no reason why they cannot dip into the market for cover.
Ultimately, if Roberts is not going to sign a new contract, Swansea might as well get money from his departure. They can survive without him, and it would be a waste to let him go for free.
